چکیده

Current data of high-redshift absorption-line systems imply that hydrogen reionization occurred before redshifts of about 5. Previous works on reionization by the Ðrst stars or quasars have shown that such scenarios are described by a large number of cosmological and astrophysical parameters. Here we adopt a semianalytic model of stellar reionization in order to quantify how the optical depth to reionization depends on such parameters, and combine this with constraints from the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We Ðnd this approach to be particularly useful in alleviating the well-known degeneracy in CMB parameter extraction between the optical depth to reionization and the amplitude of the primordial power spectrum, due to the complementary information from the reionization model. We also examine translating independent limits on astrophysical parameters into those on cosmological parameters, or, conversely, how improved determinations of cosmological parameters can constrain astrophysical unknowns. Subject headings : cosmic microwave background È early universe È intergalactic medium È stars : formation

Mutual Constraints Between Reionization Models and Parameter Extraction From Cosmic Microwave Background Data

Spectroscopic studies of high-redshift objects combined with increasingly precise data on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are beginning to place strong bounds on the epoch of hydrogen reionization. Parameter estimation from current CMB data continues, however, to be subject to several degeneracies. Here, we focus on those degeneracies in CMB parameter forecasts related to the optical dept...

Cosmic microwave background constraints on the epoch of reionization

We use a compilation of cosmic microwave anisotropy data to constrain the epoch of reionization in the Universe, as a function of cosmological parameters. We consider spatially-flat cosmologies, varying the matter density Ω0 (the flatness being restored by a cosmological constant), the Hubble parameter h and the spectral index n of the primordial power spectrum. Our results are quoted both in t...

Can Non-Gaussian Cosmological Models Explain the WMAP’s High Optical Depth for Reionization?

The first-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe data suggest a high optical depth for Thomson scattering of 0.17 ± 0.04, implying that the universe was reionized at an early epoch, z ∼ 20. Such early reionization is likely to be caused by UV photons from first stars, but it appears that the observed high optical depth can be reconciled within the standard structure formation model only if s...

Five-Year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) Observations: Likelihoods and Parameters from the WMAP data

This paper focuses on cosmological constraints derived from analysis of WMAP data alone. A simple ΛCDM cosmological model fits the five-year WMAP temperature and polarization data. The basic parameters of the model are consistent with the three-year data and now better constrained: Ωbh 2 = 0.02273 ± 0.00062, Ωch = 0.1099 ± 0.0062, ΩΛ = 0.742 ± 0.030, ns = 0.963 −0.015, τ = 0.087 ± 0.017, σ8 = 0...
